Everything you need to know about gorilla trekking, Halaal safaris, golf tours, and travel in East Africa

Gorilla trekking difficulty varies by sector and gorilla family location. Treks can range from 2 to 8 hours, with terrain that is steep, muddy, and at elevations between 1,160 and 2,600 meters. The Buhoma sector in Bwindi is generally the easiest, while Rushaga and Nkuringo require more fitness. Porters are available for hire at $20-30 to carry bags and assist on difficult sections. We recommend moderate cardio preparation for at least 4 weeks before your trip.

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old in both Uganda and Rwanda. This regulation exists to protect both the gorillas (children are more likely to carry contagious diseases) and the children themselves (the terrain can be physically demanding). For families with younger children, we offer alternative primate experiences like golden monkey trekking in Rwanda (minimum age 12) and chimpanzee trekking (minimum age 12 in Kibale, Uganda).

Visitors are required to maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters (23 feet) from the gorillas at all times. However, gorillas are wild animals and may approach closer out of curiosity, especially juveniles. Your guide will manage the situation safely. Each group is limited to 8 visitors and spends exactly one hour with the gorilla family once located. This limited contact helps protect the gorillas from human-borne diseases while ensuring a profound wildlife encounter.

Gorilla trekking operates year-round, but the dry seasons (June to August and December to February) offer the easiest trekking conditions with firmer trails and less rain. The rainy seasons (March to May and September to November) are actually excellent for photography — the forests are lush, the gorillas often feed lower on the slopes, and there are fewer tourists. Any time of year offers an incredible gorilla encounter; the best time depends on your tolerance for rain and mud.

A gorilla permit in Uganda costs $800 USD per person for foreign non-residents. In Rwanda, the permit costs $1,500 USD per person. The permit includes park entry, a professional ranger guide, and one hour with the gorillas. Only 8 permits are issued per gorilla family per day, making availability limited, especially during peak season. We recommend booking permits at least 6 months in advance. Our team handles all permit applications as part of your itinerary.

We personally vet every lodge, restaurant, and caterer we work with to ensure full Halaal compliance. Our process includes verifying Halaal certification or slaughter practices, coordinating with lodge chefs for dedicated Halaal meal preparation, ensuring strict separation of Halaal and non-Halaal food storage and preparation areas, and providing Halaal snack packs for long game drives and trekking days. We have built these relationships over 15 years of operation.

We ensure every lodge in our network offers a clean, private space for prayer. Many lodges have dedicated prayer rooms, while others arrange private areas in your tent or villa. Our guides carry portable prayer mats and can help determine Qibla direction even in remote wilderness areas. We build prayer breaks into every itinerary and coordinate activity schedules around prayer times wherever possible.

Yes, absolutely. We understand that many female travelers — especially solo travelers and those traveling with family — prefer female guides for comfort and cultural reasons. We can arrange female guides for gorilla trekking, walking safaris, cultural visits, and lodge transfers. Please mention this preference when booking so we can confirm availability and assign the right guide for your itinerary.

East Africa is generally safe for solo female travelers, including Muslim women. Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania all have significant Muslim populations, particularly in coastal areas and major cities. Our team provides 24/7 in-country support, trusted female guides upon request, pre-vetted Halaal lodges, and airport meet-and-greet services. We have safely hosted hundreds of solo female travelers and prioritize your comfort and security at every step.

The best time depends on what you want to see. June to October is ideal for the Great Migration river crossings in the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. December to February is calving season in the southern Serengeti and excellent for gorilla trekking. March to May (the long rains) offers lush landscapes and lower prices. November has short rains but beautiful green scenery. Golf is playable year-round, though the dry seasons offer the most reliable conditions. We can help you choose the perfect timing for your interests.

For a meaningful safari experience, we recommend minimum durations: 7-10 days for a single-country safari focusing on one or two major parks; 12-14 days for a multi-country itinerary combining gorilla trekking with Big Five safaris; and 16-21 days for a comprehensive Grand Safari covering Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania with golf and beach extensions. Shorter trips of 5-6 days work well for focused experiences like gorilla trekking plus one other park. Contact us and we will design the right duration for your goals.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. We also recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and routine vaccinations (MMR, DPT, polio). Malaria is present in all four countries except high-altitude areas like the Rwandan volcanoes. We advise malaria prophylaxis for most safari itineraries and provide detailed health briefings before departure. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is mandatory for all our trips.

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (beige, khaki, olive) — bright colors and white attract insects and disturb wildlife. Essentials include long-sleeved shirts and long pants (for sun and insect protection), a warm fleece or jacket for early morning game drives, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy walking shoes, and binoculars. For gorilla trekking, add waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, and gardening gloves. Most lodges offer laundry service, so packing light is possible. We provide a detailed packing list tailored to your specific itinerary.

East Africa's premier golf courses include Muthaiga Golf Club and Karen Country Club in Nairobi, Kenya; Vipingo Ridge on the Kenyan coast; Kiligolf near Arusha, Tanzania with Mount Kilimanjaro views; Sea Cliff Golf Resort in Zanzibar; Entebbe Golf Club and Lake Victoria Serena in Uganda; and Kigali Golf Club in Rwanda. Each offers a unique playing experience from parkland to links to coastal cliff-top layouts. We personally know every course and can match your handicap and preferences to the perfect combination.

Absolutely — golf safari combinations are one of our signature offerings. Kenya pairs perfectly with a Maasai Mara safari, offering rounds at Muthaiga and Karen before or after game drives. Tanzania combines Kiligolf with Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Uganda offers Entebbe Golf Club alongside gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Our itineraries seamlessly integrate tee times, game drives, and transfers, often with private charter flights between golf courses and national parks.

Most East African championship courses welcome visitors of all handicaps, though some private clubs like Muthaiga require a letter of introduction from your home club and a handicap certificate (typically 24 or better for men, 36 or better for women). We handle all introductions and bookings on your behalf. For resort courses like Vipingo Ridge, Kiligolf, and Lake Victoria Serena, no handicap certificate is required. Our Golf Director can advise on the right courses for your playing level.

Our golf safari packages include green fees and caddies at all courses, shared or private cart hire (where available), luxury accommodation at golf resorts or nearby safari lodges, all transfers including private vehicle and domestic flights, fully Halaal dining throughout, a dedicated golf specialist to coordinate tee times, and all safari activities (game drives, park fees, guides). Club rental is available at most courses by arrangement. We handle every detail so you can focus on your swing and the wildlife.

Zanzibar is the perfect post-safari destination. After the physical demands and early mornings of game drives and gorilla trekking, the Spice Island offers pristine white-sand beaches, warm turquoise water, and complete relaxation. Zanzibar also has a rich Islamic heritage — Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with historic mosques, vibrant markets, and traditional dhow culture. The cuisine is naturally Halaal-friendly, and we partner with beach resorts that offer dedicated Halaal dining and prayer facilities.

Zanzibar and other coastal areas offer a wide range of activities beyond the beach. Popular options include snorkeling and diving at Mnemba Atoll, traditional dhow sunset cruises, spice plantation tours, Stone Town cultural walks, visits to Jozani Forest to see red colobus monkeys, Prison Island day trips, kitesurfing in Paje, deep-sea fishing, and Swahili cooking classes. We tailor the pace and activities to your interests, whether you want an active extension or pure relaxation.

Zanzibar is extremely well-connected. Daily flights link Arusha (gateway to Serengeti and Ngorongoro) to Zanzibar in under 2 hours. From Nairobi, flights take 1.5 hours. From Entebbe (Uganda), flights connect via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam. We handle all domestic flight bookings, airport transfers, and baggage logistics as part of your itinerary. Many clients fly directly from their final safari camp to the beach, making the transition seamless.

We recommend booking 4-6 months in advance for standard itineraries, and 6-9 months ahead for peak season travel (June-September and December-February). Gorilla permits are limited and sell out months in advance. Mobile migration camps in the Serengeti also book up early. Last-minute bookings are sometimes possible in low season (March-May and November), but availability at the best lodges cannot be guaranteed. Contact us as early as possible for the widest choice.

Our standard cancellation policy is: 90+ days before departure — full refund minus permit and deposit fees; 60-89 days — 75% refund; 30-59 days — 50% refund; 15-29 days — 25% refund; less than 15 days — no refund. Gorilla permits and domestic flights have separate cancellation policies set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and airlines, which we will explain at booking. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers cancellation for medical or emergency reasons. In cases of force majeure, we work with clients to reschedule at no additional planning fee.

Yes, we offer flexible payment plans for bookings made more than 90 days in advance. Our standard structure is: 30% deposit to confirm the booking and secure permits; 40% due 60 days before departure; and 30% final payment due 30 days before departure. For long-haul travelers planning 6+ months ahead, we can arrange smaller monthly installments. All payments are invoiced in USD with secure bank transfer or card payment options. Contact us to discuss a payment schedule that works for you.
